Living Walls
Putting the ‘Vert’ in to Vertical Landscaping
Adding Biodiversity to a Living / Green Wall
Improving the environment is high on everyone’s list and at Frosts it is no different. Biodiversity and sustainability are two of the key factors we consider when designing a living wall. It is important so that is why we work closely with Clients and Landscape Architects during the planning and designing phases to make sure we move away from the days of ivy or ferns, and install a diverse planting scheme as we did for the Mint Hotel, Pepys Street, London.
By changing the type of plants in order to increase the biodiversity does not necessarily increase the cost of the build, and creates a colourful wall with real texture. Our living walls complement the architecture of a building, capturing the imagination of occupants and visitors for years to come.
BioPerformance
The potential for Living Walls (and green roofs) to have significant biodiversity benefit for our urban areas is immense. For example, a 6 km circle from Trafalgar Square equates to 10 million sq m2 of potential habitat and climate change mitigation.
Public awareness about the decline of the bee population has improved over the last couple of years, but there is still much to be done. Frosts take the decline of all our pollinators seriously, so plants are carefully selected not only to suit the elevation and weather conditions, but to be pollen and nectar rich to attract bees, moths and butterflies. We have helped provide a safe haven for bees on various green roof projects by donating a number of bee walls, and are now investigating the possibility of integrating bee boxes into our FVM modules for our Living Walls.
Living / Green Walls - It’s all in the Detail
Frosts FVM modular system is quick and easy to install against a wall, free standing structure or designed to fit a bespoke frame, and is planted off-site for minimum impact on your team and for maximum effect with mature plants giving instant impact.
With careful selection of plants to suit the particular aspect of the structure, whether it is internal or external to the building, our FVM module requires little maintenance.
