A long standing history of the importance of parks and open spaces

The importance of parks and open spaces has been recognised since the Victorian parks movement in the 1870s, with one of the first public parks being established at the site now known as the Derby Arboretum. Often known as the lungs of the city, these special areas created a real sense of belonging for new communities, providing areas for social interaction, relaxation and play; promoting mental and physical well-being; establishing wildlife habitats, and bridging the gap between urban development and rural areas, as the increasingly built-on countryside became less accessible to town-dwellers.

Now, more than ever, parks and open spaces are an essential component for the sustainability of towns and cities, playing a major part in breathing new life into the current regeneration of our urban areas, and their creation is vital to the provision of adaptable spaces which are accessible to everyone.

The Award Winning Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

One of the largest public parks in the south east was created relatively recently, in Stratford, in London’s East End, on the site of the 2012 Olympic Games. At Frosts, we are justifiably proud of the part we played in creating the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and also the contribution we made to work in the North Park, Athletes’ Village where we created wetlands, wildlife habitats, sports pitches, and what has surely to be the crowning glory of the park: the wildflower meadows that have brought so much joy to visitors ever since their creation.

The creation of the Queen Elizabeth Park was about so much more than creating a sporting venue. It was also about creating a legacy for future generations. We remained on site for 5 years following the Olympic Games and played a pivotal role in the legacy transformation.
